CHL Class Renewal Information

About 5 or 6 months before your CHL expires you will receive a notification from the Texas Department of Public Safety (letter). This letter will inform you that your license will expire on your next birthday and have instructions on how to renew the license. After you complete your on-line transaction a checklist will be displayed stating the documentation required for you to renew your CHL.

The checklist may indicate that you need:

New passport like photographs.
Photo Holder/ID Signature Form, CHL-6.
Electronic fingerprints.
Concealed Handgun Proficiency Certificate, CHL-100P.

The concealed handgun renewal class is 5 hours long. You will receive the most recent legal updates, a copy of the updated Texas Related Statues booklet, and a review of Texas Concealed Handgun statues Handgun proficiency and the written exam will be completed during the 5-hour class period.

CHL Renewal Class Information (First Time Applicants)

Our Texas Concealed Handgun Renewal License Class is held on a Saturday or Sunday one or two times a month from 7:00AM until around 1 pm . The classes are held at different locations in the DFW area. Check the Class Dates (Renewal License) selection on the left side of the page for the exact dates and locations.

The Texas Concealed Handgun Renewal License Class can not be taken any earlier than 6 months before your CHL expires.

The cost of The Texas Concealed Handgun Renewal Class is $60.00. This price includes:

Taking your (2) passport photographs, if required per your checklist.
Classroom fee.
Range fee (target provided).
Hearing and eye protection.

The state mandates that the CHL course be not less than 4 hours.

This CHL course is not designed to teach you how to shoot. The CHL Shooting Proficiency section of the class is to test your ability to safely handle and shoot the handgun. You will be required to pass with a score of 175 out of a possible 250 points (70%). You will need to bring your handgun and 1 box (50 rounds) of ammunition to the hotel and leave the handgun locked in your vehicle in the parking lot. If you do not have a handgun we can furnish you with a semi-automatic handgun at no charge (you will have to furnish your own ammunition).

To submit your Renewal CHL application to TXDPS go on line at www.txdps.state.tx.us/index.htm

Select "Concealed Handgun" on right side of page.
Under "Online Services" select "Renew your Concealed Handgun License and/or Instructor Certificate".
Under "Returning Users" select "Log In".
Follow the instructions to renew your concealed handgun license.
Print your checklist.
Attend class and pass the proficiency shooting and written exam for the CHL100 Training form.
Get your fingerprints at L1 Identity Services, if required. . (cost $9.95)
Send your packet to TXDPS.
